Showing off an incredible ability to dodge tough options, Europeans have come out in favor of solar and wind power as a replacement for ageing cole and nuclear plants. While this is an excellent idea, it’s not technically feasible.
So what that adds up to for me is that they’re for natural gas and oil burning, both of which are pretty much tapped and set to spiral upward in price. Lets face it, we need energy, nuclear has some decent low/no pollution options such as those nifty buried reactors out of Japan or pebblebed’s from joint development. Not that I’m absolutely certain on the last one, but they’re supposed to be safe, at least.
What we need is a “massive power” infrastructure that pollutes far less than oil or coal and isn’t terribly risky to whole populations. By massive, I don’t mean physically large or central, but producing enough power for it’s users. Nuclear, if done right, can probably fill that roll right now. Just not with the ageing dinosaur plants people seem to insist on.
