It seems that Google is hiring UI people now, too.  At least I’d assume that’s why they’ve picked up the maintainer of Vim.  Without getting into it too much Vim is an improvement over the old Vi (visual editor) for Unix, hence Vim short for Vi Improved.

One of the things Vi and later Vim are excellent for is fitting the maximum set of features in the absolutely smallest interface.  A meer 80×24 columns with extremely low overhead so as to work cleanly on 9600bps (and slower!) phone line connections .

So maybe Google’s designing something requiring a very fast, very limited UI?  Although thinking on it, hiring  Bram Moolenaar is probably a great idea as they tend toward the minimalistic interfaces all-around.

And yes.  Vi is better than emacs ;p.
