JMke over at Madshrimps shot me a quick note that the X1800GTO from ATI has a hack available to turn it into a X1800XL like card by freeing up an extra 8 pipelines or so. Normally I’d cover stuff like that over at PCBurn but unfortunately they don’t have a bloody Linux driver for anything past the X800 available from ATI.
At least ATI’s Linux driver doesn’t claim it works on any card newer than that. Which puts me right off, at the prices they charge for video cards these days.
No sense in putting up a house payment for a video card that might not even work with my system, eh?
But anyway, if you’d like to check out the hack it’s reportedly at a Chinese language site here. Thanks again to the guys at MadShrimps for pointing that one out. They’ve even got a forum thread devoted to the efforts.
