So Xgl and Compiz didn’t really have me chomping at the bit with anticipation when they were being talked up by the coders and GUI wonks earlier in the year.  It’s just another GUI layer, only faster, right?

Not exactly.  While it is another layer of GUI effects, it’s a really sexy layer of GUI effects.  Watch as your windows wobble and transparent OpenGL XScreenSavers fly across your screen while you (err…) work.

It’s still in it’s infancy as far as what’s being done with the UI, but check out the Kororaa bootable demo CD with Xgl and Compiz.  Ran like a charm on the NV6100 chipset board’s onboard video I’ve got here on the test bench.  Also, it didn’t impact the CPU/memory very much (which was expected).

Almost makes me think that GUI “advances” still matter.  Out of all the desktop UI’s changes I’ve seen lately, this one’s got the most potential.
