Looks like America isn’t the only country fighting a turf war over civil liberties. Over in the UK they’re passing a law to give authorities the ability to force the disclosure of encryption keys.

Two problems there. How do you prove someone has an encryption key? Because they’ve got encrypted data? Hardly a sound case, that.

Also, it will probably only stifle legal use of encryption in banking and such. If anyone with half a brain can simply forget the encryption key to whatever data it is (or conveniently loose the 1024 bit data “key”) it doesn’t do a heck of a lot of good.
