First 3D Game. Ever.
So it came up on some forums that a PR type from Sony stated that the playstation was the first 3D console. He didn’t, he said “introduced realtime 3-D for the first time” which means that Sony’s first use of realtime 3D was in 1994 on the PlayStation console. Factually correct, if a bit devious, and maybe not even that.
Anyway. This brought up the question of “what was the first 3D video game”. Which promptly kicked off a search on Google. After a bit of analysis, the below article (which is well written) on game design came up, revealing the first 3D game to be “Spasim, a program written by Jim Bowery” which is a claim contested by the folks at NASA/AIMS who claim Maze Wars as the first 3D title. Both were hacked together in 1973.
Battlezone in 1983 and Elite in 1985 with home PC releases cemented the 3D first person perspective in gamers minds. And now you know.
