HOPE 2006 Coming Up
The semi-annual (these days, leastways) HOPE conference (Hackers Over Planet Earth? HOtel PEnnsylvania? Who knows!) is coming up and I’ll once again be working network setup. Which is generally a fairly good time…
I’m intent on impressing upon whoever does the wireless this year that those little antenna thingies? They go up no matter how cool it looks with them pointing down.
Funny story, that. Jimmy Bones and I were setting up some of the wired networking last time. Running cables, gaffing it off, etc. And we needed a wireless connection to check something on the palmtops.
Whip ‘em out (mind, we’re standing under the WiFi hub) and.. nothing. Signal sucks. So what gives? We look around a bit, get a good look at the wireless hubs, and someone’s stuck them up near the ceiling with the antennas pointing down.
Not what they’re designed to do. So it doesn’t work hardly at all. Signal goes wacky, essentially… wish I could find a nice diagram showing what it does with those little signal wave depictions. Nothing good at any rate, and they just don’t work well.
So yea, if you’re over at H2K6 or Hope 2006 or Hope 6 or whatever numerical designation they’re doing this year look me up. I’ll be hanging out with either P2E (aka Mr. Magfest) or Crypto more than likely. Or any of the other hoardes of people often found loitering in the network room shooting the shit.
