ICANN’s rulership of the internet is once again being brought up for redecision. In a nutshell

Currently, those domains are under the control of ICANN, which is in turn empowered to administer the directories under a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with National Telecommuncations and Information Administration, a branch of of the United States Department of Commerce.

The MOU that Andy Updegrove mentions there is currently up for redecision by the USDC and could (if enough pressure is asserted) end ICANN’s governance and (IMHO) abuse of their authority as brokers of DNS.How this’ll all pan out is anyone’s guess, but I’m betting that the status quo won’t be allowed to change. Even when there’s an overwhelming tide of support for something that goes against (it almost seems I can throw “any” here) business, it tends to get swept under the rug in favor of profit.

Even when that profit doesn’t seem to benefit anyone but a small group of people, and has nothing to do with whatever it is that’s being decided on. ICANN has abused their authority to give Network Solutions absolute authority over .net and .com even in the face of equally competent lower bids.
