Ignoring the reality of the situation, Massachusetts politicians are hammering down on.. er.. a document format. That’s right folks. You’re paying them to be incenssed over a format.

A format which, I might add, is perfectly usable and doesn’t really have any downside. Only it doesn’t restrict the user to Microsoft’s software.

Anyone can implement ODF in their software. Also, when using ODF, you don’t need to use a particular office suite. Microsoft’s Office, OpenOffice.org’s OpenOffice Suite, KOffice, Abiword… the list goes on. All can be made to support ODF.

Only politician’s are angered at Microsoft no longer holding monopoly over their IT department.

What can I say… I’m a little perplexed. Hopefully anyone voting for these particularly bright individuals is too. With any luck, they’re up for election…

Naturally it’s got a bit of Andy Updegrove’s commentary in there. He seems to be the only person who can gain any public traction to shed some light on how rediculous the situation is.
