It looks like companies might have to obey the law, even when the US government tells them not to.
A judge has refused to drop the case against AT&T regarding their illegal wire tapping at the US governments request.
The nickel summary is that the NSA requested that AT&T willfully break the law and provide massive monitoring of arbitrary American citizens. Which is a power neither group legally has without little things like “warrants” and “due cause”.
The government makes the argument that whatever they want to do, legal or not, makes everyone safer. And therefore they should be able to do whatever they want.
The EFF isn’t so sure, which is why they’re filing the lawsuit to stop these extralegal shenanigans.
